Wirehand Wireless |
SEPTEMBER - FROM THE MANAGER’S DESK…
“Wirehand Wireless Internet is on the air and is exceeding all expectations!”
Wirehand Wireless along with WildBlue Satellite Internet gives WCEC the ability to offer several high speed packages of internet access.
At a strategic planning session of directors and management staff last summer, one of the strategies for success of the future of Wharton County Electric Cooperative was to have broad band high speed internet service available in rural areas. I am proud of our technical staff at the coop for coming up with two high speed internet delivery systems that we can be proud of. WildBlue uses a small satellite dish to send and receive information via a satellite 23,000 miles out in space. Wirehand Wireless Internet Service uses radio antennas at our office which can broadcast and receive internet data for members who live within approximately seven miles of the WCEC office. Both services are extremely fast and are now available to our members with speeds 20-40 times faster than our old telephone dialup service. Both systems were designed to allow for growth to accommodate member demand for the service.
To receive WildBlue service you must have a clear view of the southern sky and for Wirehand your receiver must have an unobstructed view of the antenna at the WCEC headquarters.
Keith Beal, WCEC IT Manager, designer of the Wirehand system, can answer questions on that equipment and Paul Phillips, Blake Lurker and Kenny Trochta can answer questions on WildBlue.
Another one of our strategic objectives is to help our members obtain more energy efficient use of their electricity. WildBlue and Wirehand Wireless can play a large part in achieving that goal. Just go out and “Google” the Touchstone Energy website for a great energy audit program made available to rural customers by electric cooperatives.
A wealth of information can be found on the internet by using search engines such as Google, Excite and others which can be found on the WCEC website. Do you know how to “Google”? It’s very simple and practically any information on any subject can be found by searching the World Wide Web. Today my wife found instructions on building a terrarium, we kept track of the weather radar to schedule line crews, our cooperative bank sent me a 20-page report on key financial ratios, our staff obtained copies of forms needed to comply with public utility requirements, and a member said he found a needed combine part on the internet.
If you don’t know how to search the World Wide Web, you are missing a big part of life in the 21st century. Get connected today by calling Paul Phillips or Blake Lurker in our office and you will be amazed! |
